Every year, SXSW rolls into Austin, and a few newbies walking around without a badge look at the crowds downtown and assume the whole festival is locked behind a paywall. Fortuntely that’s not the case.

Any SXSW veteran will tell youthat a huge chunk of the activations and events happen outside the official conference walls. Brands build pop-ups, artists host markets, tech companies demo new gadgets, and restaurants turn their patios into unofficial festival hangouts. If you know where to look, and a few friends in the right place, you can spend an entire day bouncing between events without ever flashing a badge.

Below is a guide to some of the best free things happening around Austin during SXSW 2026. A few require an RSVP ahead of time, but most are open to the public.
