Tucked just north of Austin in Jarrell, the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill is throwing a proper Czech-style party this fall that would make Anthony Bourdain raise a glass. On Sunday, November 2, from 1 to 6 p.m., locals and wanderers alike are invited to Český Večer an afternoon dedicated to food, drink, music, and that old-world joy of slowing down and sharing a table with strangers who feel like cousins by the end of the night.
The Soul of Czech Hospitality
Forget the small talk. This is the kind of event where you’re handed a plate and a beer before anyone asks your name. The afternoon begins with a social hour featuring hors d’oeuvres, a free-will donation bar, and that unmistakable buzz that happens when accordion notes mix with the scent of fresh pastry. The meal itself is prepared by Chef Pavla Van Bibber, a pastry instructor at Austin’s own Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, so expect the real-deal, hearty, simple, and deeply comforting.
Dancing, Polka, and Good Chaos
If you’ve never seen a proper Czech dance, you’re in for a treat. Live music will come from Walt and Glynis Harfmann’s Polka Duo, along with the Jodie Mikula Orchestra. The Junior Historians Czech Polka Dancers of West will keep the energy high before the crowd joins in for a Grand March, that moment when food, laughter, and music all melt together into something beautifully human.
This event isn’t just a nostalgia trip for those with Czech roots. It’s a celebration of community, the kind of tradition that once defined small towns and still holds up in an Austin that’s always chasing the next food pop-up. There’s even a silent auction packed with authentic Czech items, cash and check only, because some things shouldn’t be Venmo’d.
Tickets are $35 for adults and $12 for kids under twelve. Advance RSVP and payment are required by October 20, 2025, and no, you can’t buy them at the door. Payment by check is preferred and can be sent to the Austin Czech Historical Association (ACHA) c/o Helen Oelrich, 3571 Far West Blvd. #151, Austin, TX 78731. To RSVP, email ceskyvecer28@gmail.com
