Acclaimed Austin chef Amanda Turner is bringing a new Southern-inspired restaurant concept to Manor Road, taking over the former home of Hoover’s Cooking at 2002 Manor Road.

Called ChowChow, the restaurant will introduce a modern take on the classic Southern meat-and-three, a comfort-food tradition built around a choice of protein and three sides. Turner is partnering with Jonathan Sánchez, former pastry sous chef at Olamaie, to bring the concept to life.

Turner, a 2022 James Beard Award semifinalist for Emerging Chef and former chef de cuisine at Michelin-starred Olamaie, has built an impressive résumé across Austin’s restaurant scene, including time at Uchi, Uchiko, Odd Duck, Juniper, and Jester King. She also competed on Bravo’s Top Chef.

The new concept will feature a rotating menu of scratch-made Southern dishes influenced by Turner’s culinary background, while Sánchez will oversee desserts inspired by his pastry experience and Latin heritage.

“ChowChow is a concept I’ve been thinking about for years, so to finally bring it to life in a space as meaningful to Austin as Hoover’s is incredibly special,” Turner shared in the announcement.

The location carries plenty of Austin history. Hoover’s Cooking, founded by Hoover Alexander in 1998, served as a neighborhood staple for nearly three decades before closing earlier this year. Alexander has expressed his support for Turner taking over the space, and Hoover’s merchandise will remain available near the entrance during the residency.

ChowChow takes its name from the traditional Southern pickled vegetable relish, a fitting nod to the restaurant’s comfort-food roots.

The restaurant will initially operate Friday through Sunday with counter service available for dine-in and takeout. An official opening date, menu, and operating hours have not yet been announced.

For Austin diners who remember the original Hoover’s, ChowChow represents a new chapter for one of Manor Road’s most recognizable restaurant spaces.
