Old Thousand, a new neighborhood Chinese restaurant will open in November 2016 on Austin’s east side at 1000 East 11th Street, Suite #150, with a Chinese brasserie and cocktail bar concept. The restaurant will offer up an eclectic and inventive mix of flavors, ingredients, and styles with modern interpretations of classic Chinese dishes in a casual and comfortable setting. With an equal focus on “Eat In” and “Take Out,” Old Thousand looks to fill the void of an east side go-to Chinese spot and combine that with world-class cooking techniques and the best ingredients available.
Chef James Dumapit (former executive sous chef at Uchiko) and Chef David Baek (formerly of Thai Kun and Uchi) will helm the kitchen with a menu that will execute a Texas-fresh approach to traditional Chinese recipes and techniques. The menu will feature modern takes on classic Chinese comfort food and the dessert menu will include non-traditional flavors of snow-ice. The restaurant will be open for dinner service nightly with the option for take-out and will include a full bar with a creative cocktail menu.
The renovated space will feature bright floral wallpaper, a handmade 40-foot bar fashioned out of heritage oak and vintage ceiling tins and cabinetry reminiscent of an old Chinese apothecary. Prominent textures and brass accents throughout the interior further enhance the timeless yet progressive palette.
Music will play a primary role in Old Thousand’s dining experience with the restaurant’s funky, nostalgic playlist making guests feel like they’ve walked into the ultimate house party. The restaurant will seat 85 and will offer intimate tables as well as banquette and booth seating options for bigger groups.
SMGB Hospitality Co. is overseeing Old Thousand from conception to completion and will also manage day-to-day operations. SMGB is a newly formed full-service concept development, branding, marketing, and operations firm focused on the creation of forward-thinking offerings and unparalleled customer experiences within the hospitality and entertainment industries.
A full food and drink menu, hours, and an opening date announcement will be available in the upcoming weeks. For a sneak peek of Old Thousand, follow Old Thousand on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram under @OldThousandATX.
