Simon Madera has never been one to play it safe. The man behind La Holly and Taco Flats has a talent for creating places that feel like Austin at its best, bold, easygoing, and always ready for a good time. His newest concept, Churchrow Tejas BBQ, opens on October22nd in the Crestview neighborhood and already feels like the next local hangout you will want to claim as your own.

Pitmaster Miguel Vidal, formerly of Valentina’s BBQ, is back behind the fire after a two-year break, bringing his unique blend of mesquite-smoked meats and Mexican American flavors together in a way that feels both classic and new. Madera and Vidal met in college at Saint Edward’s University and have stayed friends ever since. When Madera decided it was time for a new project, there was only one person he wanted at the pit.

The name Churchrow comes from a stretch of Woodrow Avenue once lined with more than a dozen churches. The new space will be rooted in community, and Madera wants the restaurant to carry that same spirit. The building was once home to Black Gold Craft Meats and still holds two massive smokers built by Cen Tex Smokers. The space now feels warmer and more grounded, with a front patio surrounded by an agave garden where guests can sip, eat, and let the smell of barbecue roll through the air.

Vidal’s menu will offer barbecue by the pound with a Tejano twist, along with tacos and late night plates once the meat sells out. Drinks will come from La Holly beverage director Caleb Chial, who has created a bar program centered on agave spirits and bold Texas flavors.

Churchrow Tejas BBQ feels like a welcome back party for the part of Austin that loves smoke, spice, and great neighborhood stories that never get old.
