Austin’s food and wine community scored a major win at the 2025 James Beard Awards, as Arjav Ezekiel, co-owner and wine director at Birdie’s, was named Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service. The honor recognizes excellence in wine and beverage curation, hospitality, and leadership in the industry.

Located in East Austin, Birdie’s has gained national attention for its casual, counter-service model paired with a carefully selected wine list and seasonal menu. Ezekiel’s approach to wine is unpretentious but deeply informed, with a focus on ethical sourcing and a strong sense of hospitality. His recognition is a big moment not just for Birdie’s, but for Austin’s growing reputation as a serious food city.

Ezekiel was selected among beverage leaders across the country, and the award puts him in the spotlight as one of the best in the business.

Also celebrated at this year’s awards was Toni Tipton-Martin, a longtime Texas-based journalist and author, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Tipton-Martin has spent decades documenting and celebrating African American culinary history, and her work has roots in Austin and across Texas.

Beyond Austin, two other Texas names were recognized this year:

  • Thomas Bille of Belly of the Beast in Spring, TX was named Best Chef: Texas, honoring his work in pushing the boundaries of modern comfort food.
  • Gaido’s in Galveston, TX was honored with an America’s Classics Award, a title reserved for locally owned restaurants with deep regional roots and a loyal following.

The 2025 James Beard Awards ceremony took place on June 16 in Chicago, shining a national spotlight on chefs, restaurants, and professionals setting new standards across the industry. For Texas, and especially for Austin, the wins show the state’s wide-ranging talent continues to make an impact.

Birdie’s is located at 2944 E 12th St, Austin, TX 78702. Walk-ins welcome.
