Whether your strapped to your couch with a grocery list full of snacks or in locked in the cold movie theater watching the latest big budget film, this weekend fits the quintessential flix and food scenario you’ve waited 5 days for.

In Theaters July 22nd
A surprise attack from Krall (Idris Elba), an alien lizard-humanoid dictator, forces the Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the star ship Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world, as Krall hunts for an ancient and valuable technological artifact aboard the damaged ship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk, Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet.
This is the first installation of the new Star Trek film series without J.J. Abrams at the helm, and instead being directed by Justin Lin, the man behind the most recent Fast and Furious films. The poster campaign for this film has been exciting, but of course trailers don’t mean anything unless a film like this is exciting with a good story. This one looks damn good with all of the right ingredients of a proper summer blockbuster. The film celebrates the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek as it promises to pay homage to the original characters. The film is also co-written by Simon Pegg who also plays famous Scotty, so perhaps we’ll see a bit more comedy injected in to this film, but we’ll no doubt see a lot of action and adventure.

The bodacious boozy British broads are back in an adventure too big for the small screen! Their film debut takes them on a caper from the dumps of old age to the most exciting party of all; London Fashion Week. Sound terrible? Or does it sound Absolutely Fabulous?
We’re absolutely anxious to find out. With hints of “Sex and the City” satire and the same clumsy slapstick, this film promises to be a fun break from the endless comic book action tearing up screens this summer. Grab your pals and put a flask to your lips, so you can slosh your way through the smashing spectacle that is an Absolutely Fabulous Movie!

I decided to rent a movie at my favorite video store, I Love Video, without outside recommendation. I picked up Cemetery Junction, saw the names Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and took it home. Although it was not what I expected from the modern comedy geniuses, I was pleasantly surprised.
Cemetery Junction, takes place in the early ‘70s and is the story of a small town young man (Christian Cooke) that has to decide between a life of monotonous factory work and rousting about with his friends or freeing himself to explore the rest of the world. The film feels generically British complete with its quirky characters and gloomy scene scapes. Gervais and Merchant are masters at creating uncomfortable comedic storylines they break up with the occasional serious moment which opens up the character to a new depth (i.e. The Office). In this film they attempt to do the opposite and it falls a little flat.
However, the challenge of a woman’s place in the home is well displayed, the soundtrack is fantastic and the story is lighthearted enough to make you feel good about how everything turns out.
This is a great film to rent with your stuffy old British Grandma. She can reminisce about the good old days and you can learn to grab the world by the balls!
I’ve been spending time with my best friend T.V. this week and I’d been looking for something different to watch and wrap my brain around. I’m super picky. I want adventure, alien like creatures and romance and an 80’s theme. Why should I have to choose?
I found all my genres gift wrapped into one intriguing show on Netflix, Stranger Things. With stars Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine, the show has a lot going for it. Mystery kickstarts the first episode with the disappearance of a local boy and the appearance of a strange, quiet girl. Strange creatures are stalking throughout the night and everyone wants to get the boy back alive.
Stranger Things, directed by The Duffer Brothers (Wayward Pines), does an excellent job creating interesting characters and storylines while paying homage to films like E.T, Alien, Poltergeist, and Evil Dead. The show even has a few Stephen King like motifs to rouse your horror curiosity. If you’re staying in for Netflix ‘n Chill, order some Grub Hub, grab a cuddle buddy and watch an episode of Stranger Things. I don’t think you can watch just one.
