Austin Proper has recently hired Monique Wise as the property’s first-ever sommelier.  Born and raised in Austin, Monique returns to her hometown after over six years in NYC, where she began her career in the wine world. After completing her sommelier training at the French Culinary Institute in SoHo, Monique worked with the female-led wine team at Danny Meyers’ restaurant Marta, before transitioning to the iconic Union Square Cafe.

Now at Austin Proper, Monique is focused on the wine selection at, The Peacock, where she’s introducing guests to the more esoteric and unusual wines of the Mediterranean. With a list centered on unknown grape varietals and sustainability-minded female winemakers from Sicily, Turkey, Greece and Lebanon, Monique looks forward to making these wines more approachable to all.
