Meridian Hive, Austin’s only meadery, came home with a 5-medals from the world’s largest international mead competition – The Mazer Cup International, held in Denver, Colorado in March. Meridian Hive’s 2016 awards include a Gold, Silver, and three Bronze medals. This comes on the heels of medal wins in 2014 and 2015.
The Mazer Cup is open to all commercial international mead producers, with a total of 350 participating entrants for 2016. Meridian Hive received accolades across five different categories.
Medal | Mead | Category |
Gold | Meadowfoam | Varietal Semi-Sweet: Made with mono-floral honey |
Silver | OM | Pyment: Made with honey and grapes |
Bronze | Colossus | Sweet Dessert: Over 14% Alcohol By Volume |
Bronze | Discovery | Semi-Sweet Traditional: Made with only honey |
Bronze | Broken Crown | Open Category Dry: Made with honey and other fruits and/or spices |
Meridian Hive produces a diverse range of products to cater to a wide variety of consumer preferences. “It’s great to be recognized for the recipes that we work so hard to perfect. We are encouraged and honored to bring our modern take on an ancient beverage into the market,” said Mazer (meadmaker) and co-owner, Mike Simmons. “This is only our third year entering the Mazer Cup and we’ve medaled each year. It’s unbelievably exciting to take away five medals in 2016, our best performance yet,” said Operations Director and co-owner, Eric Lowe.
