Handsome Dan’s: A Nostalgic New Bodega and Bar Opens in East Austin

Austin’s craft beer scene is getting a new addition with the opening of Handsome Dan’s, a unique blend of bodega and bar on Springdale Road. The concept, envisioned by Josh Hare of Hops & Grain fame, draws inspiration from the laid-back atmosphere of Texas marinas and bait shops.

More Than Just a Watering Hole

Handsome Dan’s offers a diverse menu with grab-and-go items, classic sandwiches, and a wide array of beverages on tap. From locally brewed and on-site beers to THC-infused drinks and non-alcoholic options like Rick’s Near Beer, there’s something to suit every taste. The establishment also holds a Texas-exclusive production permit for the historic American pilsner-style beer, Champagne Velvet.

The space is designed to evoke a sense of community and nostalgia, with plans for monthly fish fries, daily sandwich specials, and boards for patrons to share photos of their fishing triumphs. The expansive patio and indoor seating provide ample space for guests to relax and enjoy the laid-back vibe.

Grand Opening and Soft Opening

While the soft opening was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, the grand opening celebration is still set for February 8th. The grand opening weekend will feature a “buy a sandwich, get a beverage” promotion, and the 8th will include a vinyl DJ and other engaging activities.

“I wanted to create a space that embodies the spirit of your high school football coach – a stand-up guy who was always there for you,” says founder Josh Hare. “Handsome Dan’s is that welcoming spot where everyone can feel comfortable and have a good time.”
