StreetCred, a crowdsourced mapping company, recently announced the launch of MapAustin, a month-long contest for Austin’s residents and visitors to map over 10,000 of the city’s points of interest for Bitcoin prizes.  The StreetCred app is available for download via iOS and Android mobile devices.  Users can begin earning points on the app starting on March 1st by creating, improving and validating places throughout Austin, including shopping, dining, and outdoors & recreation destinations, among others.  Leaderboards will track users’ positions in real-time, building competition across the city for the most contributions.

“Accessible point of interest data is a critical component of our everyday lives and our businesses, but it’s controlled by very few companies and the quality varies tremendously from market to market,” said Randy Meech, Co-Founder of StreetCred.  “We have developed a platform that incentivizes people to participate in the creation and real-time maintenance of place data so that all of us have maps that better represent reality.”

The top 50 MapAustin participants will win a share of a 15 Bitcoin prize pool, with the winner at the end of March winning 2 Bitcoin (valued at the time of release at $ 6,739.47USD*).   All of the data captured during MapAustin will be added to a decentralized marketplace for the world’s point of interest data.  All legal residents of the US who are in Austin during all or some of the contest dates can participate.

StreetCred’s mission is to create a global marketplace for the world’s point of interest data.  MapAustin is the company’s third data-collection contest.  MapNYC, StreetCred’s first contest, took place in Fall 2018.  Over 750 people from all over New York City created and validated over 20,500 unique places within services, shopping, dining, travel, outdoor & recreation, nightlife, civic, education, and arts & entertainment categories.  StreetCred also conducted MapCES, a three-day data-collection contest at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, during which participants edited points of interest and map indoor locations.

MapAustin by StreetCred will begin on March 1, 2019, and end on March 31, 2019.  For more information about MapAustin by StreetCred, visit https://events.streetcred.co/mapaustin/ or on Facebook @streetcredlabs, on Instagram @streetcredlabs, and on Twitter @streetcredlabs.
