New concept from the group behind Uchi restaurants, St. Philip, will debut with menu featuring pizzas, meatballs, small plates, sandwiches, house made breads, pastries and sweets

September 22, 2014 (Austin, TX) – The group behind the Uchi restaurants is pleased to announce that the much-anticipated St. Philip will open its doors on Thursday, October 2nd.  Located in South Austin in the small municipality within Austin known as Sunset Valley, at 4715 S. Lamar, St. Philip is named for the Patron Saint of Pastry Chefs and Bakers. Part pizza parlor and part bakeshop, guests may take out or dine in for lunch and dinner, with the bakeshop opening at 7 am.

Highlights from the menu include:

  • Small plates  – chicken and churros with maple, chipotle and chayote; and ricotta dumplings with corn and Serrano ham
  • PizzasSt. Philip with manila clams, ricotta, garlic and olive oil and Lox with cured salmon, Texas goat cheese, arugula, red onion, dill and olive oil (or you can build your own pie)
  • Entrees – meatballs served in threes with options like chicken with parmesan brodo on a house made Dutch-crunch roll or sandwiches like theCold Cutter with mortadella, salami, hot coppa and smoked provolone

Executive Pastry Chef and Director of Culinary Operations for Uchi restaurants, Philip Speer, is the chef and partner of the new restaurant and has been a driving force behind the development of the concept.

To maintain the delicious and surprising flavor combinations as well as the outstanding experience that guests have come to know and expect from the Uchi restaurants, Speer has put in place a great culinary team. Speer will oversee head chef Omar Rodriguez and head pastry chef Kerstin Bellah who both join from sister restaurant, Uchiko.

The bakeshop menu incorporates a balance of savory and sweet items that will change seasonally. The bakeshop will also offer the entire St. Philip dining menu with the exception of small plates to-go. The restaurant will feature a thoughtful curated list of craft beers and accessible wines available in both the bakeshop and dining room.

Designed by a collaboration of acclaimed local design firms Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, McCray & Co and Shelving Litmus Industries, the space utilizes mixed materials to create a design that is at once bright and warm. Sustainable products can be seen throughout with reclaimed long leaf pine in the counter tops and shelving to vintage wired glass separating the dining space from the bakeshop.

Upon entering the restaurant, guests will pass a covered patio housing outdoor dining. The entry will lead to the restaurant, while the bakeshop will have its own entrance on the north side of the building. Guests can access the bakeshop from inside the restaurant as well.

St. Philip is located at 4715 S. Lamar in Sunset Valley and open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
