Lucky’s Puccias, Austin’s favorite downtown food truck for authentic Italian sandwiches, is expanding in a big way, thanks, in part, to locals’ love of Lucky’s freshly baked, wood-fired puccias. Owner Lucky Sibilla has opened a new Lucky’s Puccias & Pizzeria brick-and-mortar location at 1611 W. Fifth St. to join the wildly popular food truck. The new 1,700-square-foot restaurant, funded partially through a successful Kickstarter campaign, features a larger menu, including the addition of several wood-fired pizzas, as well as Lucky’s beloved puccias, and several new appetizers, salads, desserts, and beer and wine offerings.
Owner Lucky Sibilla, who hails from Southern Italy and learned the art of bread making as a teenager, has long had a passion for cooking freshly baked pizza, but the confines of his food truck’s tiny wood-fired oven restricted his menu to puccias alone. Now, four years after establishing his Lucky’s Puccias food truck in downtown Austin, pizza is the co-star of the menu at the new Lucky’s Puccias & Pizzeria, which boasts a massive custom-built, traditional-style wood-fired oven.
Lucky’s new made-to-order Italian pizzas include the classic Margherita, with fresh mozzarella cheese, organic tomatoes, and basil; the Napoletana, a simple and traditional Italian pizza with Kalamata olives, capers, anchovies and oregano; the savory Capricciosa, with sliced ham, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, spicy salami, Kalamata olives, and an egg, if desired; the Quattro Formaggi, a classic four-cheese specialty; and the Lucky’s Pizza, with prosciutto crudo, fresh mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce and arugula. Also featured on the menu is the Americana, with fresh mozzarella cheese, organic tomatoes, pancetta and a cracked egg, all topped with French fries. The Americana, Lucky’s special interpretation of the perfect American pizza, was inspired by a similar American-style pizza served at the small pizzeria two doors down from Lucky’s family home in Southern Italy.
In addition to the new pizzas, the Lucky’s Puccias & Pizzeria menu includes Lucky’s mainstay puccias (Puccia Classica, Lucky’s Puccia, Puccia Contadina, Puccia Vegetariana and Hot Pastrami), as well as a rotating weekly special featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients. Other highlights include several Italian appetizers and salads, and mouth-watering desserts, such as Lucky’s Tiramisu; Terrina Di Cioccolato, a decadent combination of almonds and chocolate ganache; and a freshly made Italian Gelato from local favorite Dolce Neve.
Also new to the Lucky’s menu is a variety of beers and wines, including Primitivo di Manduria, a dry red wine hailing from Sibilla’s Southern Italian home region of Puglia; Negroamaro, a deep red wine also from Southern Italy; and a small selection of Italian white wines.
Lucky prides himself on using organic vegetables and imported Italian specialties, and cooking with local ingredients whenever possible, such as the olive oils he sources from Con’ Olio Oils & Vinegars, Austin’s first premium olive oil tasting bar.
Lucky’s Puccias & Pizzeria features a casual and simple yet welcoming and spacious environment, perfect for gathering with family or friends over a traditional Italian sandwich or freshly baked pizza. After four years of serving customers at his food truck, Lucky is thrilled to now be able to offer his guests a relaxing and cozy restaurant space in which to dine — complete with heating and air conditioning! The star of the décor is, of course, Lucky’s custom wood-fired oven, which has layers of thick walls to help keep in more heat, and is artfully decked with stone, a variation on the architectural style often found in Lucky’s Italian hometown.
