Mystery novelist Joanne Fluke has brought her most current food-themed novel to Austin this Monday, March 3rd and Tuesday, March 4th. During her visit she will share about her newest book and serve the Tio Tit0’s Sublime Lime bar featured within it.

When asked about how she got into incorporating recipes into her novels she stated, “I always wanted to write a cookbook, but since I’m not a celebrity dessert chef and I don’t own a famous restaurant or bakery, no one took me seriously. That was when I was asked if I’d like to try my hand at writing a cozy mystery series. I said yes, as long as I could include some of the family recipes I had stacked in twenty-three shoeboxes in the corner of my kitchen. And that’s when Hannah Swensen, small town baker and amateur sleuth, was born.”

Fluke also shared, “I grew up in small town Minnesota where food is a part of every occasion and it’s considered rude not to offer a cookie or some kind of sweet treat with coffee. I think Minnesotans are the original “comfort food” people. If you’re visiting a sick neighbor, you bring soup, or custard, or something else that’s nourishing and easy to eat. If there’s a family crisis, you all sit around the kitchen table (with food, of course) to talk about it. Food accompanies every happy occasion and also every unhappy occasion. After a funeral, relatives gather in the church basement for lunch and condolences. With a background like mine it was natural for me to pair cookies and crime, and murder and munchies.”

It’s always great to know that we aren’t the only ones that constantly have food on the brain! Fluke also has a compilation of over 100 recipes and vignettes from her Hannah Swensen series titled “Joanne Fluke’s Lake Eden Cookbook”! Make sure that you take the opportunity to go visit Fluke as she talks about her most current book “The Blackberry Pie Murder” and shares one of her recipes, during her trip in Austin!beach blanket bad boys
