Cover 3, Austin’s upscale Sports and Dining restaurant has opened it’s doors downtown! Known for it’s upscale dining with a love of the game, Cover 3 invites guests to enjoy their three zones: dining, spirits and sports. Cover 3’s made-from-scratch menu includes a Chilled Shrimp & Crab Towermade with fresh seafood, melt-in-your-mouth USDA Prime 22 ounce Bone-In Ribeye, and Buffalo Chicken Wings perfected after five years of taste testing and much more. Cover 3 offers a full bar with a wide selection of wine, cold beer courtesy of 24 beer taps and one iced Cobra tap with four chilled liquors, as well as craft cocktails.
What to Expect
Formerly leased by Third Base Sports Bar, Cover 3 has made distinct visual improvements in it’s decor bringing it’s high end style to this cozy little building. The original location feels similar to a high end bar you’d typically find in Las Vegas, the downtown location offers an impressive face lift in both the interior style as well as Cover 3’s well known eye for quality. There are plenty of the newest high end tvs all over the restaurant and at the bar to keep your attention locked on sports until you’re blue in the face.
What to eat
No respectable sports bar is complete without it’s signature style chicken wings. Cover 3’s wings are, needless to say, impressive with the perfect amount of crust and tenderness make the biggest wing lover devour every last bit of meat right down to the bare bone! Start out with Cover 3’s amazing deep fried Chipotle Ranch Wings or my favorite, the Seared Ahi Tuna with udon noodles & snap pea salad with sweet onion vinaigrette. For the main course, try out the “Big Tex” Burger topped with a Half Pound & Ground Fresh, Tostado, Black Beans, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Guacamole & Pico. It comes very close to being flawless, if you that’s your speed! If you’re looking for a stellar seafood entree, go for the Jumbo North Atlantic Scallops with white wine & goat cheese sauce, applewood smoked bacon, asparagus & toasted almonds or the Hong Kong Salmon with sautéed shiitake mushrooms, scallions & spinach with light soy-ginger broth. Both are outstanding and will no doubt kick aside any preconceptions about typical bar fare.
What to Drink
Cover 3 serves up a full bar with a premium well and a spectacular selection of spirits. Along with 70 wines from their impressive wine cellar, they’re serving some of Austin’s coldest beer, featuring four rotating taps and two chilled liquor taps.
Overall I’m impressed with everything Cover 3 has done to create an impressive face lift in the downtown location. It leaves no empty feelings from the previous occupier and is impressive enough to maintain it’s high standard of excellence that has been clearly established in other locations. Honestly, it’s the closest way to experience luxury box seating at a game without actually being there. I’m still partial to the Anderson Ln. location due to it’s abundant space and convenience, but one can never have enough sports bars downtown. Cover 3 is a cut above the rest especially if you’re looking for a bit of luxury in your sporting experience.
