Last summer an Uchiko server, Leah Ortiz, was in a devastating motorcycle accident,  leaving her and her boyfriend in $140,000 in debt.  The restaurant community is joining forces and hosting  a benefit onSunday, January 19 at Swift’s Attic, will all proceeds going directly towards Leah’s medical bills.   The dinner will be served family style, similar to the meal restaurants provide before opening to the public.  Participating restaurants include Uchiko, Uchi, Barley Swine, Congress, Second St. Bar + Kitchen and Swift’s Attic.  It will be a good time for a greater cause.

Uchi and Uchiko will partner with some of Austin’s most celebrated restaurants and chefs to prepare a family style meal, similar to the dinner restaurants traditionally serve to staff before opening to the public, to benefit Uchiko server Leah Ortiz.  In July 2013, Leah and her boyfriend were severely injured in a motorcycle accident which resulted in several surgeries, multiple nights in the hospital and left them unable to work for months.   Both were uninsured and owe $140,000 in medical bills.

We are so overwhelmed with the generosity of the restaurant community,” comments Leah. “We are incredibly lucky to be alive and I am excited to be back at work with my Uchiko family.”
